Background
Skyrim Realistic Overhaul Textures is a massive (10GB) texture overhaul mod for Skyrim Legendary Edition and Special Edition. SRO overhauls the majority of the game's visuals. SRO was developed by Ancient originally in moddb.com site who started this texture overhaul back in 2016 with the latest update from summer 2018. SRO offers nearly complete texture overhauling for the entire game with textures ranging from 2K to 4K. It currently overhauls architecture, clutter, dungeons, effects, furnitures, landscapes, LODs, plants and terrains for the main game, Dawnguard DLC and Dragonborn DLC. When compared to other texture overhauls this mod offers high quality textures while keeping the vanilla art style. To my mind this is the most vanilla friendly texture overhaul mod and offers a good base for texture modding.
The reason I brought this information to Nexus is because this texture overhaul isn't that well known among the Nexus community simply because this is not offered as a downloadable content in here. Ancient has kept SRO strictly in moddb.com which is why I can only offer a guide for the download. My primary idea was to bring this gorgeous and visually important mod to you as an information and not as a mod. Every credits go to Ancient for creating and hosting this mod in its primary location.
System Requirements
Because the size and quality of this texture overhaul is fairly large I recommend to have a graphics card with video ram (vram) of 2GB or more. Those who have less than 2GB may have performance problems with this mod. Remember to look for your GPU's vram and not the RAM of your system (two different things!).
Compatibility
This texture overhaul changes majority of the game's textures which is why most of the other texture mods might conflict with it. This overhaul is a very good texture base for your game if you plan to mod it further. Just make sure that your other texture mods overwrite this mod and not the other way! This mod is really good by itself too.
Download Instructions
Additional information: the size of these files is massive (10GB) which is why it is going to take a long time to download them. It is also going to take some time when you install them with your mod manager (it might make it seem like your manager is stuck/frozen. Do not worry, it is not frozen or stuck, it's still processing the installation even if it seems like so. Do not touch or do anything, let it install).
1. Go to this website (it is safe) for the original mod page created by Ancient: (www#moddb#com/mods/skyrim-realistic-overhaul/downloads).
2. Download these files: Skyrim Realistic Overhaul Part 1, Skyrim Realistic Overhaul Part 2 and Skyrim Realistic Overhaul Part 3.
3. Download either SRO 1.8 Original Skyrim Version Update (for Legendary Edition) or Skyrim Realistic Overhaul 1.8 Update (for Special Edition).
Optional: I like to organize my mods into one single file (for aesthetical and convenience purposes) which is why I would create an empty folder on my desktop and move all files from the installed packages in this order: part 1, part 2, part 3 and lastly the update file. After that I would create a package of it and simply name it as "Skyrim Realistic Overhaul". After that I would install it with my manager as I usually would install any mod. If you don't like this, simply go to 4. phase from the previous 3.
4. Install the four files with your mod manager in this order: part 1, part 2, part 3 and lastly the update file.
